Managing Partner & Co-founder
Tom is a Founding Partner of Capvent AG. He has more than 14 years of direct and fund investment experience with growth companies in the U.S., private equity transactions in Europe, and direct and fund investments in Asia. Tom was very involved in many structured debt financings for high-growth companies on the West Coast of the US, mainly in Silicon Valley, from 1991 to mid-1998. The activities included sourcing and structuring the transaction, performing detailed due diligence on the company and its competitiveness, and corresponding monitoring of the deal and the firm. Previously, he was an Executive Director at Societe Generale in Zurich/London in charge of building the buyout business in Switzerland and Germany. While at Societe Generale, Tom Clausen, along with Varun Sood, played significant roles in several transactions that were primarily debt and mezzanine direct investments, with a focus on cash flow for primary source of repayment. Many of these transactions included a mandate to structure, arrange and advise acquisition and project debt finance Prior to that, Tom was a member of the senior management for Credit Suisse, and later for Credit Suisse First Boston San Francisco/Silicon Valley from 1991 to 1997.
He has a law degree (lic. iur.) from the University of Zurich, and an MBA from the University of San
Francisco with Beta Gamma Sigma Honours. Tom is a Swiss and Italian national, and speaks German, French and English.
Managing Partner & Co-founder
Varun is a Founding Partner of Capvent AG. He has over 12 years of combined experience in LBO financing, private equity, mezzanine finance, and communications and technology investment banking. Prior to Capvent, Varun was Executive Director at Societe Generale, and head of the Continental EuropeanLBO team. In an earlier role at Societe Generale, and previously at ABN AMRO, he played important roles in lead-arranging large financing commitments for equity sponsors and strategic investors for large telecom, media and technology projects, including fixed line, wireless, cable and satellite operators. His early experience was at the Alcatel-Alstom group. Varun has served on the professional standards committee of the European Venture Capital Association (EVCA) and on the advisory board of several funds over the years. He has a B.A from Delhi University and an MBA from INSEAD. Varun is an Indian and French national, and speaks English and French fluently.
Rohan, who joined Capvent in 2007, is a Managing Partner at Capvent. Rohan brings with him extensive operational and entrepreneurial experience and a strong local business network. Prior to joining Capvent in 2007, Rohan was involved in his family business, a consumer packaging company, from 1995 onwards. Today, the company is a very successful and profitable consumer packaging company in India. In 2005, Rohan Ajila was a pioneer in creating the earliest international Health and Fitness business in South India. Rohan was also the Founder & CEO of Indiamarkets, a pioneer in the online and offline B2B e-commerce and supply chain consulting business. The new innovative supply chain transformation services provided Low Cost Country Sourcing (LCC) to large international companies looking to procure or translocate facilities to India and China. The company also provided these services to some of the largest consumer companies in India that resulted in millions of dollars of savings for these companies. He started his career as a credit rating research analyst with CRISIL-S&P and then an Investment Manager for the Everest Fund (one of the first Indian private equity Funds) with Trans Arabian Investment Bank (TAIB). He holds a Bachelors degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Finance and International Business from the University of Houston, Texas, USA. He is an Indian national.
Connie, who joined Capvent in 2011, is a Managing Partner based at Capvent’s China Office. Prior to joining Capvent, Connie was the Director and Founder of Vision Investments Co. Ltd from 2002 to 2011, which initially provided advisory and consulting services to foreign companies, in the food & beverage, cosmetics, personal care, advertising and electronics sectors, entering the China market. Later, the business model expanded and evolved to making investments, where Connie made a total of three investments with family and friends’ capital in early venture to early growth investments. Prior to that, she worked as a Director of Business Development, Southern China Centre for Innovative Pharmaceuticals, where she was responsible for the evaluation of investments in companies and products.. Previously, Connie was ad eputy general manager at Asiapower’s M&A division from 1999 to 2001, where she researched investment targets and evaluated investment opportunities in China, and prepared listings in Singapore. From 1996 to 1998, she was a manager at ABN AMRO’s commercial banking and structured finance department and at Peregrine Investment Bank from 1994 to 1996 in their Investment banking/direct investment department. She started her career working for EXSA (UK) Ltd. from 1991 to 1993 as an Engineer. She holds a PhD in Engineering from UMIST, Manchester UK (1990), and an M.B.A. from INSEAD in (1994).
Investment Director - Asia, Unilever Corporate Ventures
Pawan has over 12 years of diversified industry experience in FMCG working with companies like HUL, Britannia and Nokia with rich experience in various facets of Finance like Corporate Finance, Mergers& Acquisition, Business Finance and Sales Finance.
Pawan Joined Unilever in 2008 after having worked in Business Finance Roles in companies like Britannia and Nokia. In the last 7 years he has done diversified roles in Finance in HUL. He started as the Regional Finance Manager for the East Branch partnering the Sales Team in the Go To Market Transition. He then moved on to Corporate Finance as the Management Accountant for HUL driving Performance Management for South Asia. Post this he did a stint in Business Finance in the fast growing Skin Care Category before moving as Head of Finance for Water Business(India & Global) where he played a key role in shaping the Business and Strategy for India and Other Markets Globally. He Played a very important role in one of the key acquisitions for Unilever in China in 2014 when it acquired a majority stake in a Water Purifier Company-Qinyuan.
In April 2015 he was made the Investment Director-Asia for Unilever Ventures where he is responsible for the Investments of Unilever Ventures in the Region and works closely with Capvent. He is an integral part of the Fund’s investment team and acts as the key link for Capvent to Unilever's vast sector, functional resources and networks. His understanding and insights in the Consumer space and Financial Models through his operational experience is an important element which he brings to the team. Pawan is a certified Chartered Accountant.
